Susana Balbo is renowned throughout Argentina and the world for her incredible winemaking skills, experience and passion. Susana has been making wine since she earned her oenology degree in 1981, and she has probably produced a wider variety of wines than any other winemaker in Argenina. She has made wine in Australia, California, Chile, France, Italy, South Africa and Spain, and she spends a month each hear in a different wine region of the world, studying with local winemakers and growers. She's practically a national treasure, and has been called "the Evita of wine." Brioso is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Malbec, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Petit Verdot from vineyards at 3550 ft in Mendoza's Uco Valley and Lujan de Cuyo, 29-year old vines, 15 months in new French oak. Tikal “Jubilo” 2012 ($40 regular price, $32 net at tasting)
Ernesto Catena (son of the famed Nicolas Catena) spent his childhood in the vineyards of Mendoza among wine-growers and local pundits. A skilled horseman, software developer, and book editor, Ernesto pursues all that gives pleasure in life. This hedonism (in the best sense of the word) shows through in his wines. It is a style meant to provide enormous pleasure rather than provoke contemplation; an expression of emotion rather than intellect. He has named his wines with passion in mind: Patriota (Patriot), Amorio (Love Affair), Jubilo (Rejoice), and Locura (Madness). Jubilo is a blend of 60% Malbec, 40% Cabernet from 2 top locations in Mendoza's Uco Valley, 30 year old vines at 3600 ft elevation. 16 months in a blend of new and 2nd-use French and American oak. Classic Bordeaux profile, deep and plummy with sweet new oak overtones and perfect balance. Drink now-12 years. Parker 90, Spectator 94 - GPA
Luca “Beso de Dante” 2010 ($40 regular price, $32 net at tasting)
Laura Catena, Nicolas' daughter, grew up in Mendoza. Although she now splits her time between Mendoza and San Francisco (where she is a Emergency Room Physician, university professor, mother of three, and accomplished tango dancer!), Laura's heart remains in Argentina and winemaking. She had a vision of creating a new breed of Argentine wines: small quantities, artisan quality, and true to their individual terroirs. A true pioneer of small-grower relations in Mendoza, Laura's incredible, limited production wines come from some of Argentina's best fruit from low-yield, high elevation, family-owned vineyards. Her final varietal blends deliver power along with complexity and finesse. They are the ultimate expression of rigorous vineyard management, viticultural experimentation, strict irrigation controls, skilled winemaking, and a quest for quality at any cost. Laura named this wine Beso de Dante (Dante's Kiss) after her young son. Crafted this blend of 55% Malbec, 45% Cabernet from vineyards in Agrelo and the southern Uco Valley, 30-year-old vines planted at 3800 ft. 14 months a blend of new and 2nd-use French oak. A nose of plums and cigar box, black color to the rim, just a touch of new oak on the finish, nicely integrated tannins. Drink 5-10 years. Parker/Spectator 92, Tanzer 91 - GPA
Von Siebenthal "Carabantes" 2010 ($36 regular price, $28.80 net at tasting)
Founded in 1988 by Swiss lawyer Mauro Von Siebenthal, this estate has rapidly become one of the most highly regarded wineries in Chile. Mauro works both valley-floor and hillside vineyards to crafts exquisite wines of Cabernet, Syrah, Carmenere and Malbec, and has achieved serious critical acclaim for his efforts. The Carabantes is a blend of 85% Syrah, 10% Cabernet and 5% Petit Verdot from vineyards at an average of 1475 ft in the Aconagua Valley. Vinified in Stainless then aged in French oak for 18 months, it's filled with aromas of smoked meat, asian spices and dried herbs. Absolutely spectacular wine and a perfect foil for a grilled soy-marinated steak. 250 cases produced. 91 pts both Parker & Tanzer - GPA
Vinedo de los Vientos 2008 "Alcyone" ($39.50 regular price, 31.60 at tasting)
This amazing dessert wine from Uruguay is made of 100% Tannat, the grape responsible for the inky black reds of Madiran in the deep south of France. Borrowing techniques from the Barolo Chinato (herb-infused Ripasso Barolo) style, and the Marsala style of slow oxidative aging, maceration with vanilla beans, and finally gentle fortification with brandy, third-generation vigneron Paolo Fallabrino has crafted a truly unique and amazing dessert wine that's truly a fusion of old and new!
